First Login

Your first login sets up your home directory on marble. You need to login first (and create a home directory and user account) before you can use graphical programs like X2Go. To do this:

  • Make sure you have signed up as a marble user
  • Login to marble via the terminal (ssh) using your unimelb username, from within the unimelb network. You will be prompted for unimelb password.

If you are a student login via (note double slash):

~$ ssh STUDENT+username@marble.earthsci.unimelb.edu.au

If you have staff account, you use:

~$ ssh username@marble.earthsci.unimelb.edu.au

The first time you login you will get message that says:

The authenticity of host 'marble.earthsci.unimelb.edu.au (172.29.163.18)' can't be established.
RSA key fingerprint is cf:eb:d3:fb:68:fc:14:83:f9:3e:86:05:0a:7d:6b:60.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?

Yes is the correct answer (if the fingerprints match). These commands should work for both linux and OSX. For windows these commands should function with to use putty, or bitvise (perhaps). See Dylan if that doesn’t work out (and you are in Melbourne).

The full pathname of your home directory will be /home/STUDENT/username for student accounts, and /home/UNIMELB/username for staff accounts. Read only data can be found at /data/marble/.
